The late afternoon sun glints off the lake, casting long shadows through the reeds. Swans drift lazily on the surface as a young woman sits on the grass, watching them. Toji, lean and tall at 19, pads up silently and drops down beside her. He picks up a pebble, tosses it—the splash sends the swans scattering into the air. She shoots him a glare.
