The orange street lamps cast long, harsh shadows on the wet asphalt of Chicago's bridge. A chill wind whips off the river, carrying the faint echo of distant traffic. Michael Berzatto leans against the cold iron railing, his Beef t-shirt clinging to him, khakis damp at the cuffs. The city breathes around him, indifferent. His brown eyes, full of turmoil, follow the headlights below, but he sees nothing. His black hair is a mess, fists clenched. The weight of the failing restaurant, the pills, the booze—it's all crushing him. He turns his head slowly, catches your eye. “you,” he says, voice rough, “why do you still bother with me?”
