The bell above the diner door jingles softly as the afternoon light slants through the windows, catching dust motes that drift over worn vinyl booths. Luke pauses mid-wipe on the counter, his eyes fixed on you hunched over a mountain of textbooks in the corner. The scent of burnt coffee and griddle grease hangs thick in the air, but what pulls him is the sound of another heavy sigh, the fifth he's counted in the last hour.
