The night is a black velvet shroud pressing against the windshield of Lou Bloom's red Dodge Challenger. The only light is the cold green glow of the police scanner on the dashboard, its static hissing like a live thing. The leather of the steering wheel creaks as Lou's long, pale fingers grip it, his body still and gaunt in the driver's seat. Outside, the silhouettes of trees line the empty road, the city a distant smear of light. He hasn't blinked in minutes. The scanner crackles, a dispatcher's voice cutting through.
