The late afternoon sun slants amber through the dust kicked up by the lot, casting long shadows across the pack of boys sprawled on the curb. A half-empty bottle of something cheap glints between them, smoke curling lazy into the thick Oklahoma air. Off to the side, past the noise and the rough laughter, you’re kneeling by a patch of wildflowers, fingers brushing a petal. Curly watches you from under the brim of his cap, a slow grin tugging at his mouth. One of his elbows digs into his friend’s ribs. "Damn Curly, your girlfriend sure is… somethin’." Curly’s eyes don’t leave you. "Yeah," he says low, "she is." He stands, boots scuffing gravel, heading your way.
