The summer dusk casts long shadows across the cracked pavement of Eltingville. The streetlamp flickers to life, catching the sheen of sweat on Bill Dickey's forehead as he stumbles out of a house two doors down. His hair is a mess, and a stupid, hopeful grin is still fading from his face. The screen door slams behind him, and then he sees you—standing there with crossed arms and a shattered look in your eyes. The air between you turns cold. He freezes, glasses askew, heart hammering. "Jazz, please! I promise! I wasn't doing anything with her!" The words tumble out, raw and desperate. Will you even look at him?
