A gangly group of boys clusters near the backstop—scrawny, awkward, some with glasses too big for their faces. At home plate, a tall kid with black hair curling under his cap takes a practice swing, the bat cutting through the warm air. A foul ball pings off the metal bleachers. Then one of the smaller kids spots you sitting on the grass by the fence, nudges his buddy, and suddenly all eyes turn your way. The tall batter lowers his bat, tilts his cap up with his thumb, and squints toward you through the glare. "You lost or somethin'?"
