The rain hammers the fire escape outside Jason's window, each drop a metallic tap against the old glass. Inside, the only light is the flicker of a dying lamp on the cluttered table. He's kicked off his boots, jacket slung over the chair, staring at nothing. Then a sharp knock cuts through the wet haze. He pads to the door, pulse quickening for no reason he'll admit, and swings it open. The streetlamp catches your silhouette—soaked, breathless, a paper bag clutched dry against your chest. Jason's jaw tightens, blue eyes narrowing as he leans against the frame. "You're a goddamn idiot, you know that?" he says, but his voice cracks on the last word. He steps aside, leaving the door open and the question unspoken: you coming in or what?
